Rested children and relaxed parents
connecting light and physical performance to improve sleep effectiveness of your child
The initial idea was to bridge the children’s fear of the dark with an app combined with a light. To check the sensibility of our project, we decided to support it with a research. We’ve conducted an online questionnaire and we’ve taken several interviews with parents. Thanks to the research we have noticed some problems we weren’t aware of before.
We have learned that many children need a calming ritual that prepares them for bedtime. Besides, they often want to sleep in a light that is working against the effectiveness of their sleep. That is a well-known fact by the parents, who are used to getting up at night to turn off the light in the children’s room. This is directly connected to the fear of darkness – children wake up at night and come to parents’ bed, afraid to sleep alone in the dark.
1. creating the habit of going to sleep at fixed time
2. providing more restful sleep for children (and thus for parents)
3. helping children to fall asleep at night with no fear of darkness around them
app in use
The lamp informs the child about the approaching sleeping time, creating the atmosphere with a colourful, dim light in the room.
The app ensures convenient conditions for restful sleep by turning off the light when children are in a deep phase of sleep.
When children wake up in the middle of the night, the app will turn on the comforting light. The parents can set the time in the app or just presses the “bedtime” button. From then on, the light slowly fades to calm the child down and when the children are asleep it turns off gradually.
A wristband measures the heart rate to indicate the moment of falling asleep and the depth of it. When the children wake up in the middle of the night, the light turns on in the prechosen colour and intensity. This ensures no shock associated with awakening in total darkness and helps continuing sleep without distress.
